Orofacial Myology
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. These disorders may affect, directly or indirectly: breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and development, chewing, swallowing, speech, occlusion, temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, facial esthetics, and more.
Orofacial Myology is known by many names (orofacial myofunctional therapy, MFT, myofunctional therapy, oromyofunctional therapy), but no matter what it is called, it focuses on the muscles of the mouth and throat. The function of these muscles at rest, while breathing, when chewing and preparing the swallow, and coordinating these movements for swallowing and in speaking is the focus of orofacial myofunctional therapy.
With orofacial myofunctional therapy, a patient can regain the joy of eating, speaking, breathing, and even sleeping more soundly.
Everyone deserves to be educated about myofunctional disorders and treated if they suffer from OMDs.
